Dr.
Rhoda M. Alani is a world-renowned melanoma researcher
and clinician whose cutting-edge research is poised to
change the way we diagnose and treat cancer patients. She
is an Associate Professor of Oncology, Dermatology, and
Molecular Biology and Genetics at Johns Hopkins University
School of Medicine where she runs The Laboratory of Cutaneous
Oncology in the Oncology Center.
Dr. Alani's research focus
is in understanding the molecular basis of melanoma development
and progression with the aim of translating her laboratory
findings to better prevention, detection, diagnosis, and
treatment of melanoma. Dr. Alani's clinical interests are
focused on pigmented lesions and melanoma and she is Director
of the Pigmented Lesion and Melanoma Clinic in Dermatology
at Johns Hopkins. She is also actively involved in teaching
medical students, graduate students, and dermatology residents

Alani was a Howard Hughes Medical Institute-NIH Research
Scholar from 1988-1989 and subsequently received her M.D.
degree with Honors and Distinction in Research from the University
of Michigan. She went on to an internship in internal medicine
at Yale-New Haven Hospital and a residency in dermatology
at Harvard Medical School. Following her clinical training
Dr. Alani was a research fellow at the Harvard Cancer Center
where her work was highly regarded and led to the receipt
of a prestigious research training award from the National
Institutes of Health.
Dr. Alani further developed her research interests as a fellow at Memorial Sloan-Kettering
Cancer Center. She moved to Johns Hopkins in 1999 as an Assistant Professor of
Oncology, Dermatology, and Molecular Biology and Genetics and was promoted to
Associate Professor in 2004.
She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Societies, the
American Academy of Dermatology, the Society for Investigative Dermatology, and
the American Association for Cancer Research. She was notably elected to the
prestigious American Society for Clinical Investigation in 2005. In 2006 she
was named an Outstanding Alumna from the Dermatology training program at Harvard
Medical School. Dr. Alani is the author of numerous scientific publications for
which she has received much acclaim. Her work has been received with much excitement
by both the scientific and lay community and has been highlighted in The Lancet,
ABC News, Fox News, and The Baltimore Sun.
Dr. Alani is a reviewer for numerous scientific journals including Cell, Cancer
Cell, The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Cancer Research. She
is a noted speaker on issues of skin cancer risk, basic molecular mechanisms
of melanoma development and events leading to tumor metastasis and is in great
demand for speaking engagements worldwide.
Dr. Alani is the owner of several US patents and is the Director of the Scientific
Advisory Board for Syan Biosciences. She is the recipient of numerous awards
and honors and was most recently a finalist (top 25 in the world) for the NIH
