Medical Student Education Program

Director: S. Elizabeth Whitmore, M.D.

The Medical Student Education program in our department offers three different options for interested candidates. These are open primarily to Johns Hopkins medical students, but visiting students are also accepted depending on their qualifications and availability at the time.

The dates of the rotations follow the half-quarter and summer terms of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine's academic calendar and visiting students are to follow those dates as well. Availability is on a first-come-first-served basis.
One visiting student may be accepted per month, but only if the chosen elective is not filled by Johns Hopkins medical students.

Basic Dermatology Elective

Duration: 1 month

Number of students accepted per month: 6

Pre-requisite: One basic clinical clerkship.

Description: Students may apply during their 3rd or 4th year of medical school for a clinical elective in dermatology where the focus is placed on intense exposure to a large number of patients in different clinical settings, requiring active participation of the student in the patient care process.

The elective month is divided into four week-long modules: Inpatient Consultation Service, Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center, Johns Hopkins at Greenspring Station and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

These different services provide an excellent opportunity for students to interact with different types of patients and to be exposed to a wider range of skin problems. Parallel to the clinical activities, there are daily didactic sessions in the morning and occasionally at the end of the work day as well.

Formal lectures on basic dermatology topics are given by dermatology residents and lectures on a more advanced level are taught by faculty members in the department. Students are encouraged to select and prepare an interesting clinical case for a formal presentation during Grand Rounds at the end of their elective and to submit it for publication if possible.

No formal final exam is given, and grading is based on the evaluations submitted by residents and faculty members at the end of the month.

Advanced Dermatology Elective

Duration: 1-3 months (may be extended if necessary)

Number of students accepted per month: 1

Pre-requisite: Basic Dermatology Elective at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions

Description: Students interested in a specific area of dermatology, in dermatology research or students interested in pursuing dermatology as a career may benefit from this elective. Arrangements have to be made between the interested student and the faculty member who will be mentoring them.

The main objective of this elective is active participation in a small basic or clinical research project, and/or in one of our subspecialty clinics. The faculty mentor will provide the specific schedule, but students are encouraged to participate in all didactic activities, including weekly Grand Rounds, during the time spent in the department.

Basic Dermopathology

Duration: 1 month

Number of students accepted per month: 1

Pre-requisite: 3rd or 4th year students

Description: Students may apply during their 3rd or 4th year for an elective in Dermatopathology. Students will attend daily sign out where they will be exposed to a large volume of cases. Additional exposure will come through the use of study sets which are available to the students.

The students will attend the dermatology weekly Grand Rounds where they will see patients and participate in the discussion and presentation of the pathology for those patients. Additionally, the students will attend two formal Dermatopathology teaching sessions per week.
